Roll #55 – Ferrania P30

My HGB photography workshop came to an end, so I have a bit of a more free head now. At the same time my pre-ordered rolls of Ferrania P30 arrived. What better thing to do, than load a camera and go out for a walk.

I think the things I see during the workshop – through exhibitions, photography books and the other attendees – is influencing my current interest / style. Not sure if I like it, or where it will lead.

One thing that’s a lot on my mind lately is to talk less about technical stuff and focus more on subject. Let’s see how this will go as well…

Roll #54 – Kodak Portra 160VC

Somehow I started a small photo project on the topic “Blue”. The first images were taken with Leo (of Kupfer & Eisen) along a small canal near her apartment. I didn’t really have a plan, but Leo helped out immensely.

Some photos came out great, some very strange – guess that’s what you get for using film stock, that expired 17 years ago. I’ll probably use up what I have and focus on buying fresh film after that.

Roll #53 – Rollei Superpan 200

The 52 rolls project is finished, but I still have film stock left. This one I got from a trade with Ruslan. I shot everything on one afternoon and there’s some sort of chain/fence theme going on…

Until now I used whatever developer the community darkroom provides (usually Atomal 49). For this one I started looking into taking more control. So I  researched developers, ordered Rodinal concentrate online and mixed it in the darkroom myself. It all sounded a bit scary, but after actually doing it, it wasn’t really that difficult.

Roll #52 – Shanghai GP3 100

The sprint is over, I finally reached my goal of using 52 different kinds of film. Not in the 52 weeks planned, but shit life happens. Most of it was developed by myself. Except maybe 1-2 rolls, I also scanned everything myself. I think I now – after 2,5 years of doing this – have a better understanding of film photography, developing and scanning.

I want to write a “Lessons learned” article, but this will take a bit of time. Until then you have some new images to look at. The Pentacon framing problems are back, time to get them under control again.

Roll #51 – Lomography Earl Grey 100

Now that the sun is showing its face more often, all the ISO 100 films can creep out of the fridge again. And now that I’m getting closer to the finish line of 52 rolls, I can feel the urge to start into a sprint.

Balancing a somewhat strict schedule – posting every sunday – with going somewhere to shoot some actually interesting photos often fails. Good work takes time (and more than one roll of film).

I haven’t really decided on what to do with the blog, once I reached the original goal. I might continue, but with a slower pace. I might concentrate more on long term projects and use it as some sort of project diary. I might mix both. I might do none. For the moment I’ll focus on the finish line and sprint.

[Update] Kodak BW400CN

After shooting so many different film stocks it’s difficult to fit shooting something new into the normal shooting process. After so much testing I start to gravitate towards certain films. But there’s still a huge pile of rolls I haven’t shot yet. Guess I’ll slowly go through them one by one.

I already shot Kodak BW400CN in medium format. This is an 35mm add-on. Following the “+1 stop for every decade of expiration”-rule I exposed the role as ISO 200 and developed normally. Not sure how it was stored, but the quality suffered quite a bit.

Roll #50 – Fujicolor Superia Premium 400

Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia Premium 400 (35mm)

 

The Superia Premium was one of three film stocks I imported from Japan. The other two being Natura 1600 and Venus 800. It spent quite a while – at least some months – in the camera and was able to see autumn and winter. I’ll probably further reduce the number of cameras I actually shoot with, as hard as it is.

After scanning I noticed a constant line through all my negatives, looks like I scratched it somehow. Maybe while spooling onto the development reel, maybe some other way. But I’m not that sad, the colors are okay-ish, but nothing special.

There are two more rolls (ordered a 3-pack), that will be used for regular day to day shooting and I’ll save the Natura for special projects. Not sure about the Venus yet – have to shoot it first.

Nothing special for roll #50. Two more and I’ll finally reached my goal, except 16+ months late.
