Roll #55 – Ferrania P30

Ferrania P30 (35mm, Alpha)

My HGB photography workshop came to an end, so I have a bit of a more free head now. At the same time my pre-ordered rolls of Ferrania P30 arrived. What better thing to do, than load a camera and go out for a walk.

I think the things I see during the workshop – through exhibitions, photography books and the other attendees – is influencing my current interest / style. Not sure if I like it, or where it will lead.

One thing that’s a lot on my mind lately is to talk less about technical stuff and focus more on subject. Let’s see how this will go as well…

[Update] Kodak BW400CN

_DSC7281
Kodak BW400CN (expired 02/2008)

After shooting so many different film stocks it’s difficult to fit shooting something new into the normal shooting process. After so much testing I start to gravitate towards certain films. But there’s still a huge pile of rolls I haven’t shot yet. Guess I’ll slowly go through them one by one.

I already shot Kodak BW400CN in medium format. This is an 35mm add-on. Following the “+1 stop for every decade of expiration”-rule I exposed the role as ISO 200 and developed normally. Not sure how it was stored, but the quality suffered quite a bit.

Roll #50 – Fujicolor Superia Premium 400

Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia Premium 400 (35mm)

The Superia Premium was one of three film stocks I imported from Japan. The other two being Natura 1600 and Venus 800. It spent quite a while – at least some months – in the camera and was able to see autumn and winter. I’ll probably further reduce the number of cameras I actually shoot with, as hard as it is.

After scanning I noticed a constant line through all my negatives, looks like I scratched it somehow. Maybe while spooling onto the development reel, maybe some other way. But I’m not that sad, the colors are okay-ish, but nothing special.

There are two more rolls (ordered a 3-pack), that will be used for regular day to day shooting and I’ll save the Natura for special projects. Not sure about the Venus yet – have to shoot it first.

Nothing special for roll #50. Two more and I’ll finally reached my goal, except 16+ months late.

Roll #49 – Kodak ColorPlus 200

Kodak ColorPlus 200 (35mm format)

During my search for a cheap color film for everyday shooting (no special projects) I stumbled upon this film stock. The price is quite low (2,50 EUR per roll) and a quick look around on the internet showed okay-ish color rendering. I wanted to test it first, before ordering in bulk, so I added a roll to my last c-41 chemistry order.

The images were taken during the middle and end of January. I’m not quite sure about the sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker yellow tint. Guess that’s the drawback you have to accept when using cheaper material? Or its the lens? Questions… questions.

Roll #48 – Kodak T-Max T400 CN

_dsc7278
Kodak T-Max T400 CN (expired + discontinued 2003–2004)

Before I got this roll as a gift, it was stored – probably for several years – in the attic, where I also develop my black and white film. It gets quite hot in the summer, not the best kind of long term storage conditions for film. On top of that, the film stock was discontinued at least 12+ years ago. So naturally quality has suffered.

Kodak T-Max T400 CN is the predecessor of Kodak BW400CN (Roll #45) (also discontinued, but only in 2014) and is developed in color chemicals (C-41). I used these kinds of black & white stock (like Ilford XP2 Super 400) a lot when I was younger. You got b/w photos, but the development was cheaper, than regular b/w films at the drugstore. It was sad to see them go. Luckily I can now develop color and b/w films myself – a lot cheaper than sending it to a lab.

Discarded christmas trees, mud, rain – welcome to January in Germany. The photos after that were made during the “HGB Rundgang” exhibition (yearly tour of the Academy of Visual Arts student work), also showing some of my work.

Roll #47 – Fujicolor Natura 1600

I think I’m in love. The colors! The warmth! Being able to shoot at night! And still looks good in daylight! Only the price is a bit hefty. Good thing I have friends, who sponsor such delights. Thaaaanks Caro! xD

All images were taken around christmas. The first two in Leipzig(‘s christmas market), the rest while visiting my brother in a rural part of Germany.

On a different note: it seems that I’ll finally finish the “52 rolls of 2015” in… 2017. Only 5 more to go. I can see the finishing line in the distance!

Roll #44 – AGFA Vista Plus 400

_dsc4469
AGFA Vista Plus 400

In July the FoDo (monthly photography meetup) group decided to do a photo walk, instead of our usual critique evening/night. We started at the edge of Leipzig’s city center and kept wandering around. Some might say aimlessly. Some might say with purpose.

I took the photo walk as an opportunity to test a new lens. I’ve been using a 50mm prime for 10+ years now and the new focal length (105mm) was very strange. But wanting to photograph people is new to me as well. I’ll have to see if the 105mm is something I can/will use to take portraits, or if I’ll go back to the familiar feel of 50mm.

On top of that I’m quite new to developing color photos myself as well. The main problem area at the moment is washing the film:

Left: after first round of washing / right: after a second round of washing. Consistent scanning is still an issue as well. I guess there’s a reason why professional film labs charge that much…
